BHMA Standards for Integrated Door Systems Improve Commercial Sliding Door Specification
BHMA Standards for Integrated Door Systems Improve Commercial Sliding Door Specification
As discussed in previous blogs, standards from the Builders Hardware Manufacturer Association (BHMA) offer quantifiable data on how integrated door hardware will perform over its service life. Grouped into three grades depending on performance, BHMA-certified hardware allows specifiers to make more informed decisions about which products will deliver the most cost-effective value to a project.
That said, today’s door systems are more than the sum of their parts. Integrated door hardware certified to BHMA standards sets the bar for quality in terms of the performance, durability and service life of a full door. However, BHMA standards for integrated door systems offer more robust documentation about how a full system will perform on site.
Whether a door meets BHMA A156.32-2023 for Integrated Swinging Door Opening Assemblies or A156.43-2023 for Integrated Sliding Door Opening Assemblies, these integrated door system standards provide tangible benefits to construction professionals and building owners alike.
Before getting into the benefits of specifying a BHMA-certified integrated door system, it is important to know what these types of doors are and how they may differ from others.
Whereas a standard door system is made from component parts designers and specifiers combine to meet project-specific goals and requirements, an integrated door system is manufactured and supplied complete and ready to install with all integral hardware. Despite having its working hardware, framing, leaves and other components within a single package, integrated door systems still allow customization.
This is because when a door is manufactured as a system, the manufacturer will pair appropriate hardware and operational components to door leaves and frames to ensure the full system operates accordingly. BHMA-certification confirms that the system will function as intended over its entire service life.
Similar to how BHMA certification sets the standard for quality integrated door hardware, BHMA standards for integrated door systems quantify a full system’s durability, longevity, strength and resilience according to a repeatable testing protocol. The testing standard not only helps project stakeholders select door systems that meet their specific goals and needs, but it also ensures door systems are compared through apples-to-apples metrics.
For example, doors that incorporate BHMA-certified hardware (but are not tested as a full system) might include hardware that meets BHMA standards for a Grade 1 rating in standard door sizes. However, if the hardware is specified in a door that is oversized or significantly heavier than an average opening, in a lead-lined door for instance, the hardware may not be able to tolerate the wear-and-tear these opening systems will likely endure.
Certifying a full integrated door system gives a more accurate assessment of how that opening will function when installed compared to a hardware-only approach.
Integrated door systems certified to BHMA standards deliver multiple points of value to design teams and occupants.
For design teams, specifying a door system certified to BHMA’s A156.32-2023 or A156.43-2023 standards offers:
· A more efficient process as teams will not have to research product rating and compatibility
· Quantified metrics about how the door will function as a fully installed system
· More detailed examination of operational parameters to help maintain accessibility and other code requirements
For occupants, BHMA-certified integrated door systems provide:
· A more accurate projection of maintenance and replacement schedules
· Robust documentation of door value for increased stakeholder transparency
· Consolidating door information into a single point of contact to streamline operations
It is important to note that there is not yet a sliding door system that has been certified to meet BHMA’s integrated door system standard A156.43-2023. Until that changes, project teams are encouraged to specify openings from door manufacturers with a proven track record of supplying consistently high-quality systems.
