In this course, participants will learn how commercial interior sliding doors solve challenges for a range of commercial spaces with their ability to attenuate sound, improve space efficiency, promote design flexibility and visually complement today’s modern interiors. In addition to highlighting door design innovations, this course will showcase how flexible openings can benefit projects in healthcare, education and office settings both immediately and in the long-term. Participants will also learn how sliding doors can support complex project needs such as acoustics, life safety, physical security, ventilation, durability and accessibility without compromising aesthetics.

In a recent survey, architects indicated that in nearly a quarter of healthcare projects, design flexibility was a client goal. Design flexibility supports occupants in both the present and future by allowing buildings to adapt to large and small shifts in need. Doors represent an effective means of enhancing a building’s flexibility. However, code requirements and performance capabilities can complicate door specification. At the end of this course, participants will be able to identify how sliding doors support design flexibility, describe code requirements, illustrate how sliding doors can be used to solve multiple design challenges and better understand performance data.

Health care design best practices are often in flux. While shifts in end-user needs have necessitated more nuanced health care design discussions, changes in building and medical technology have expanded the possibilities within these projects.
Among the many components of the built environment, openings play a significant role in a health care facility’s accessibility, functionality, and ability to achieve an occupant-centered design.
This course will leverage information from health care projects to guide architects through various opening options. It will illustrate how they can solve complex health care design challenges, such as balancing privacy and openness or optimizing floorplans for space-use and accessibility.
