Procedure / Operating Rooms

Interior Sliding Doors Create Accessible and Hygienic Spaces

Procedure and operating rooms have more stringent demands than exam rooms. They need to facilitate the movement of equipment and people. In some cases they may require entryways with adequate seals to meet positive pressure or corridor smoke rating requirements. They also need to use space efficiently. In addition to housing medical supplies and needing plenty of clear floor space for circulating nurses to move, procedure and operating rooms need to house large medical devices like movable beds, vital monitors, utensil carts and more.

In Application

Many designers and clinical risk assessment teams are looking to interior sliding door systems to provide a multifunctional solution. For example, ExamSlide™ sliding doors come with perimeter seals and an optional drop down seal that not only provide enhanced acoustic performance and a UL 1784 smoke rating but also can support a room’s ability to achieve positive pressure if needed. These types of spaces often demand controlled access, and ExamSlide can easily be specified with electric strikes or mag locks tied to a facility’s access control system.

ExamSlide can also save up to 30 square feet per door while removing approach clearances. This not only provides procedure and operating rooms more space within but also makes these spaces more accessible to those with limited mobility or staff rolling a specialized bed into the room. These sliding door systems also support easy-to-use hardware that complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to aid accessibility goals.

When equipped with automation, sliding door systems can be opened with a wave of the hand or press of a button or foot pedal. As such, they can further support ADA requirements by sidelining both operating force and easy-to-use hardware requirements. Additionally, automation systems like AutoMotion™ help reduce points of contact for more hygienic operation. These systems are also compatible with keycard systems and other security measures to help maintain the delineation between open, semi-restricted and restricted areas.

"We learned these barn doors save 10 square feet per exam room because they require no swing clearance, so we standardized on their use."
